HLiving on a homestead has its benefits, but it also has drawbacks. You need to do chores and there is work all day long. From hauling to transporting your produce or equipment, a reliable vehicle is an essential part of homestead life. Unfortunately, choosing the right vehicle for your smallholding is not so straightforward. Here are several things that you must consider so that you are getting the best deal for your estate.

Determine the Scale of Activities

The activities that you do in your homestead is a determining factor in deciding which type of vehicle to purchase. If you are doing collection and distribution of produce, you will need transportation with adequate trunk space. Think also if you’re going to do a lot of DIY activities such as building sheds or other storage spaces, and repairing existing structures, because you’ll want a vehicle that is multi-purpose where you can use it to transport produce, materials, and people.

In addition, if you’re scaling back on your operations or intend to diversify your activities, you will probably need a specific type of car. For example, if you only intend to use your homestead for personal needs, you won’t need a truck or a pickup. But, if you plan to ramp up production of fresh produce for commercial purposes, you’ll need a van or truck that can handle the volume.

Look at Weather Conditions

The climatic conditions in your area also determine whether you need extra traction during winter or a heavy rainy season. Choosing between a two or four-wheel drive depends if you are going to be on the road often with a haul or if you need extra power for everyday tasks at the homestead.

Establish a Budget

A budget is always part of any planning whether you’re buying your weekly groceries or purchasing a vehicle. Once you have decided on what type of car would be most suitable for your homestead whether it’s a van or pick-up, set a realistic budget that you can afford. You must also decide whether you’re going to buy brand new or used.

Note that your budget must not only include the purchase price, road taxes and registration fees. It must also include recurring costs for vehicle upkeep. These will include insurance payments to protect and provide you with adequate cover. Maintenance expenses should also be included such as gas, servicing, and unforeseen repairs.

The function of a vehicle in your homestead activities and your predetermined budget are important factors that will influence the choice of vehicle that you will buy. Once these issues are settled, it is a matter of shopping for the models, comparing prices, and test driving and your purchase is done.
